Starting with Taekwondo, then moving onto Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate, Nam Wah Pai Kung Fu, Aikido, Jujutsu and finally settling on Ryukyu Kempo Karate. Mr. Rickard found a source of inspiration in the ways of Ryukyu Kempo Karate and immersed himself in the art. With the demise of Ryukyu Kempo Karate New Zealand in 1999, Mr. Rickard began searching for a better transmission of Ryukyu Kempo and a continued learning path. After a long search, Mr. Rickard was introduced to Kaicho Amor and in 2005 travelled to Oak Grove to attend Summer Camp. Having found the "Holy Grail" of Ryukyu Kempo, Renshi returned to New Zealand to spread the word. As the New Zealand Head Instructor, Mr Rickard is kept busy not only catering for the needs of the Alliance students in New Zealand, but ensuring that the curriculum is taught according to Kaicho Amor's standards. "Yes, it keeps me very busy, but there is no other Ryukyu Kempo Karate like this in New Zealand and we have a responsibility to preserve what we have been taught and to ensure that the true Ryukyu Kempo is available in this country" says Renshi Rickard. "There are many Ryukyu Kempo schools in New Zealand, and many very capable Instructors, but unless they wear the Alliance crest and are part of our organisation, they are not teaching true Ryukyu Kempo" "In years to come, we will look back and say 'We were there at the start' and be proud of the organisation we have created"
