Learning The Sai at Spring Camp Nicole Rickard, Age 12, Rokkyu At Spring Camp we all got to learn a weapon and I chose to learn the Sai from Sensei Charmaine Ellis. There were only four of us in the group so it was easier for Sensei Ellis to teach us.
Sean Richardson, Tania Rickard, Angie Innes, Nicole Rickard and Sensei Charmaine Ellis The weapons we could learn at Spring Camp were Bo, Sai, Tanbo, Jo, Kama and the cutest little things, the Chizikunbo. The Kunishi No Sai Kata was pretty easy after you got the hang of handling the Sai by flipping them over in both hands and I got the hang of it pretty well. I wasn’t able to learn the whole kata because we ran out of time and camp finished, But Sensei Ellis came up to Tauranga from New Plymouth to have more training with Sensei Kruse and take part in our regular classes. Sensei Ellis came and stayed for two days and we went to the beach and she didn’t believe how white the sand was so she took some home. Then we walked around Mount Maunganui. When she left to go back to New Plymouth it was pretty sad but we had some fun. By the end of Sensei Ellis’s visit I had learnt the full kata and Sensei Courtney Kruse helped me to tidy it up a bit and corrected me on some moves from the Sai kata, Kunishi No Sai.
