July Instructors Weekend The URKA(NZ) Dojo Instructors gathered in New Plymouth over the weekend of 13, 14 & 15 July for advanced training and to support the Bukenkan for their first Friends and Family Demonstration Evening. Unusual as it was, Mount Taranaki stuck it's head out of the clouds for the whole three days of the gathering, allowing some fantastic photos to be taken.
Strange sight - the mountain without cloud... The weekend provided a chance for all Yudansha to learn the Naihanchi Kuzushi Shodan kata, and for a few the chance to learn Naihanchi Nidan Kuzushi. Aside from the rugby test on the Saturday night, every possible moment was spent training and sharing information. Hart Sensei, from Wellington, brought Duanne Hazelwood with him (or more correctly, Duanne brought Mr hart...) both of whom had the opportunity to learn more of the Alliance curriculum allowing them to advance the capabilities of their Dojo. The training started as soon as the Wellingtonians walked through Mr Richardson's door at about 9pm on the Friday night. While gathered round the fire, in the lounge Renshi launched into a session teaching exercises 4, 5 & 6 as it meant no-one had to move too far from the fireplace, thus all stayed warm. Saturday morning brought with it a beautiful day - nothing like the weather of previous days which had seen the Bukenkan Dojo damaged by tornados - not a common sight in these parts. Training begun in front of the house under the watchful eye of Mt Taranaki. Starting with the Naihanchi kata for Duanne and Mr Hart. Everyone moved round to the rear of the house when the wind came up, so instead of looking at the mountain, we all stared at the Tasman Sea instead. Study of the Naihanchi kata continued with Shihan Richardson learning Naihanchi Kuzushi Nidan while Mr Hart and Duanne continued with the three basic Naihanchi kata. Just after mid-day, we all departed for the Dojo to meet the other Yudansha for a kata clinic. After checking out the basic kata, Renshi taught all the Yudansha Naihanch Shodan Kuzushi before moving on to look at Sanbon Kumite and Ippon Kumite. The Yudansha clinic finished around 4pm giving everyone plenty of time to get prepared for the demonstration later that evening, The demo began at 7pm and was a chance for the Yudansha to show their friends and family the results of their efforts. All twelve basic kata were performed along with some good demonstrations of kobudo kata and combat bo. Shihan Richardson demonstrated Bo Kihon and asked Renshi Rickard to demonstrate some weapons applications. Mr Richardson also took the opportunity to formally introduce Mr hart to the Bukenkan Dojo.

Renshi takes the opportunity to tie Shihan up in a knot. Training continued on the Sunday morning with a chance for the Yudansha to ensure that they had a clear grasp of what they had learnt the previous day. Renshi put them through their paces with some hard and fast kata before giving them the chance to clarify any queries left from Saturday. All in all, the weekend was a fantastic success. Congratulations to Duanne Hazelwood who, during the course of the weekend, demonstrated his outstanding commitment and drive and was awarded his Rokkyu by Renshi Rickard as a result of his efforts and abilities. |
