Guiding Principle 9 "Take care not to develop only your favourite technique neglecting others as this will leave a weakness in your defence. Be cautious not to become too theoretical or technical because these too are weaknesses." The Old Masters were well rounded in their abilities. They understood the importance of a wide range of well-honed skills. In Life Protection the area you are weak in will surely be your downfall when push comes to shove. Take the time to learn every little thing equally as well as each other as you never know when you may need the skills developed by a given kata, technique concept or principle. If you fail to understand the benefits offered by only one small technique, then your Karate, as a whole will be weaker for that lack. "Be cautious not to become too theoretical or technical because these too are weaknesses." With all that said, to spend too much time thinking about technique without actually doing technique is as effective as eating salt to cure thirst. It is important to understand the theory behind the motion, but failing to apply that theory is wasted learning in much the same way as a University graduate may have little life experience or practical experience in their given field, the Karate practitioner who is purely theoretical will be less able to apply their knowledge than someone who knows less but trains more. By the same token, a practitioner who only trains without understanding runs the risk of training incorrectly due to their lack of knowledge. Knowledge does not give power - proper application of the correct knowledge, in the correct situation, with experience will lead to power. A concept perhaps misunderstood by many politicians!
