Restrain My Physical Abilities Through Spiritual Attainment "Kekki no yu wo imashimeru koto" Dojo Kun number 5 is of particular importance to Karate. As we learn new skills, we gain an understanding of how to cause severe injury to the human body. Part of our spiritual growth as Karate practitioners, is to come to the understanding that the human body is fragile (i.e. not 10 foot tall and bullet-proof). As we develop, we then come to understand that fighting is not fun, as it takes little more than a well placed strike, or bad fall to end or severely impact a persons life - even in the Dojo, with protective gear and rules. Part of the beauty of Ryukyu Kempo is that through our Tuite and Kyushojutsu we are able to render an attacker helpless with minimal physical injury. Even the attacker has to get up the next day and live with what they have done. An attacker who is left harmless, but relatively uninjured will most likely feel less hatred and vengeance than one who is disabled for life or who is left dead. Many attacks simply occur due to lack of control by an otherwise normal person (i.e. too drunk, picked a fight). The more we come to understand the weaknesses of the human body, and to understand the importance of life and respect, the more we develop spiritually. If we are religious, regardless of our chosen faith, these 5 Dojo Kun will fit seamlessly into what we believe, and if developing our lives and strengthening our person through the Dojo Kun brings us increased spiritual awareness, then we must be taking a correct course of action and be building a better life. |
