Develop a Respectful Attitude

"Reigi wo omonzuru koto"

10 foot tall and bullet-proof? Does that sound like a respectful attitude to you?

The music of today is only too quick to encourage youth to have attitude, however, how many people actually understand what attitude is? Let alone a respectful attitude.

Do you want others to show respect to you? In order to be respected, we must show respect. It is said that respect is earned not given - this is partially true. In the first instance however, someone must show respect.

When a new student enters the Dojo, it is an Instructors job to respectfully greet that person and to make them feel welcome. Through that act of giving respect, the Instructor will gain the respect of not only the new beginner, but an increased respect from the other students.

When the Instructor sets the example, the students will follow. If they don't follow, they can't be adhering to Dojo Kun 1 & 2.

Respect extends to everyone we come into contact with. Even someone who has offended you must be dealt with in a respectful manner - no matter how hard that may be. It is a life lesson we all must learn.

This is a hard thing to do, to be big enough to show respect to those who offend us, but we must work towards it.

Are we perfect? Can we do this all the time? If you're still human, then most likely not. However, even when you are disrespectful, learning to realise what you have done will be a big step towards growing as a person. Perhaps if you realise when make mistakes, then you can endeavour not to repeat it in the future.
