2006 Class Awards

Classes at the Ryukenkan wrapped up for the 2006 year on the 20th of December with a Friends and Family Demonstration evening followed by the presentation of several Awards of Merit for excellence and achievement both in and out of classes.

The demonstration saw friends and family of the students treated to a display of the skills learnt throughout the year.

Beginning with a formal bow-in and a powerful demonstration of the Naihanchi Kata by the group, many parents and other family members got their first chance to see how their loved ones had progressed.

Following the basic Kata demonstration were demonstrations of the Naihanchi Kuzushi Kata by Sensei Standish and Renshi Rickard.

A stunning demonstration of Combat Bo was performed by Gavin Collinson, Gabriel Mike and Nicole & Daniel Rickard, followed by Sakugawa Jo and Jo Bunkai by Sensei Standish assisted by Kate Baguley.

Following the Jo was a demonstration of Kuniyoshi Sai and Sai Bunkai by Nicole Rickard assisted by Daniel Rickard, then the tables were turned as Daniel performed Kama Kihon and demonstrated Kama Bunkai using Nicole as his partner. There's nothing like a family that bonds through pointy and sharp weapons!

Gavin Collinson followed with a demonstration using the Chizikunbo, which was immediately followed by Gabriel Mike with Nunchaku Kihon no Kata and Bunkai thus bringing the demonstration to a close.

Various Awards of Merit were presented for efforts both in and out of class.

First up was Kelly Ballard who received his Award for excellence at Greenpark School through 2006. Kelly was recognised for Most Improved Student in Room 1, for his participation in the School Traffic Safety Programme and for h efforts during the Prep course in 2006 which assist students to experience and understand the principles of business and commerce. Kelly is unquestionably one of the most well rounded students both in the Dojo and in school. We have no doubts that he will go far in life.

Following Kelly was Daniel Rickard receiving his Award for Most Improved Student, Room 3, Greenpark School - a crowning moment for his final year in Primary School. Also receiving the same Award was Max Moser whose performance in Room 3 had left their teacher unable to choose a clear winner and having to present a dual Award to both boys.

Nickie Collard received and Award of Merit for successfully passing her Trade Certification as a Hairdresser. In addition to this success, Nickie has also achieved highly in 2006 competing in Hairdressing competitions.

Unfortunately, both Max and Nickie were unable to attend the class that night and will receive their Awards in 2007.

Renee Hodges-Ginns received Awards for Most Improved Student in her class at Tauranga Intermediate School and for Most Improved Student - Ryukenkan Dojo Junior Division. Renee's performance both in class and out in 2006 has been unstoppable.

Renshi Rickard and Sensei Standish were placed in a difficult position when choosing candidates for the Most Improved Adult Student category for the Dojo. All the students in the adult class had made such huge improvements over the year that singling any one person out was impossible. In the end, the Instructors chose to base their decision on students who had both shown improvement in class, but had also made efforts to improve the class as a whole, whether it be through recruiting new students or assisting with class operations. Even this was not enough to single out any one student. In the end, Gavin Collinson and Kate Baguley were both recognised for their outstanding performance both in training and in support of the Dojo and were awarded Most Improved Student for the Adult Division.

Renshi Rickard gave his thanks and appreciation to the class and to Sensei Standish for his support throughout what has been an exciting year. "In all my years of teaching, I have never had the pleasure of working with a group like this... " said Renshi, "I look forward to having the privilege of tying Black Belts on each and every one of you."

The night was topped off with a lolly scramble giving Sensei Standish the chance to "feed the chickens" as he kept the kids busy for a few minutes. Students were able to enjoy refreshments with their friends and family before departing to enjoy their Christmas break.

Classes resume on the 15th of January 2007 at our Greenpark School Dojo. We're all looking forward to a fantastic year of training.
