A Brief Apology...

Our apologies for the lack of updates on our website recently. Other events have prevented us from being timely in passing on new information and opportunities. We should be able to bring more regular updates and information in the coming weeks.

US Summer Camp 2009

Unfortunately, due to the world economic position, we have decided that we will have to forego our annual Summer Camp trip for 2009. We will resume our annual trips when the NZ dollar stabilises and regains some ground against the US.

2009 Autumn Camp

Autumn Camp for 2009 will be held again in New Plymouth. Dates have been confirmed as the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of May. Download your registration form from the link below. We have taken extra steps to keep the price of camp as low as possible during these tight times. As a result of this, there will be no camp T-shirt for this year.

Camp Registrations Must Be Received By The 15th of April - Deposit Included!

Curriculum Updates

Download the latest curriculum updates from the links below. Replace the pages in your Student Manuals with the new information. These changes have been implemented to better implement the study of the Bo for all students preparing for Shodan testing, and to ensure that all students have protective equipment prior to testing for ranks that have a kumite requirement.

The changes are as follows:

  1. Rokkyu - Purple Belt: Bo Exercise is introduced as a requirement

  2. YonKyu - Green Belt: Bo Kihon is introduced. In addition to demonstrating correct use of protective equipment for kumite, students must now own their own fist protectors, shin & foot protectors and mouthguards. Both of these are testing requirements

  3. Sankyu - 1st Brown Belt: 2nd Kobudo weapon is introduced as a testing requirement.

  4. Nikyu - 2nd Brown Belt: Kumi Bo Shodan (Combat Bo 1) is introduced as a testing requirement.

These changes apply to both the Junior and Senior curriculum.

Our Mission

The Mission of the United Ryukyu Kempo Alliance in New Zealand is to provide the most authentic Ryukyu Kempo Karate instruction available in New Zealand.

By ensuring that only the most dedicated and committed Instructors are allowed to teach under the guidance of URKA (NZ), we will continue to excel in teaching Traditional Ryukyu Kempo Karate as it was intended by its founder Taika Seiyu Oyata.

Our Mission is further supported by the United Ryukyu Kempo Alliance World Headquarters through the Alliance Mission Statement:

The United Ryukyu Kempo Alliance is an organization formed to bring

sincere Martial Artists together in brotherhood.

A group of Martial Artists who believe in the traditional concept of

One Heart, One Mind and One Spirit who uplift each other with support and pride in friendship.

An Alliance of Karate practitioners who unite together

to represent and promote all that is good in traditional Karate.

URKA (NZ) Profile

The United Ryukyu Kempo Alliance (New Zealand) was founded in 2004 by Renshi Marty Rickard after many years spent searching for an accurate representation of Ryukyu Kempo Karate. While there are many Ryukyu Kempo schools worldwide, very few have any actual, credible lineage back to Taika Seiyu Oyata.

While he was not the first to use the name Ryukyu Kempo, Taika Oyata was responsible for the common use of the name. Taika Oyata was privileged to study under some excellent teachers, all of whom gave him the tools he needed to develop Ryukyu Kempo to what it is today.

Kaicho Allan Amor studied with Taika Oyata for many years before beginning the United Ryukyu Kempo Alliance. Under the guidance of Kaicho Amor, the Alliance has spread across the United States and abroad.

We are proud to present the Alliance teachings in New Zealand and we strongly believe that no one else in New Zealand can offer Ryukyu Kempo in a more traditional or accurate representation.
